Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts

Parts made by or for a vehicle manufacturer; repair policies may treat them differently from alternative parts.

Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are parts made by, or to the specifications of, the vehicle’s manufacturer. A policy or repair agreement may also refer to other kinds of replacement parts, such as aftermarket, recycled or remanufactured parts.

Which parts may be used after a claim can depend on local rules, the policy, vehicle age, availability and the repair arrangement. Ask the insurer or repairer to explain the parts standard in writing.
